How to Get Your San Diego CCW Permit
A step-by-step guide for first-time applicants. The most important thing to know: you must apply with the San Diego Sheriff's Department before booking your training course.
Apply with the Sheriff First
The #1 mistake first-time applicants make is booking a training course before submitting their Sheriff's application. California law requires you to apply first — your training must be completed as part of the Sheriff's process, not before it.
The Step-by-Step Process
Submit Your Application to the San Diego Sheriff
Visit the San Diego Sheriff's Department website and complete the online CCW permit application. You'll create an account in their system and submit your personal information, employment history, and reason for wanting a permit.
Complete the Live Scan Fingerprinting
After submitting your application, you'll be directed to complete a Live Scan fingerprint submission at an approved location. This initiates your background check with the California DOJ and FBI.
Attend Your Sheriff's Interview
The Sheriff's Department will schedule an in-person interview to review your application, discuss your reason for wanting a permit, and verify your information. This is a standard part of the San Diego process.
Receive Your Training Authorization
Once your application clears the initial review, the Sheriff's Department will authorize you to complete your required training. This is when you book your course with Ready2Carry.
Complete Your Ready2Carry Training Course
Choose your path: Blended (8 hours online + range day) or Fully Online (16 hours online + live-fire qualification). Both include your required classroom instruction and live-fire qualification at The Gun Range San Diego – Kearny Mesa.
Submit Your Certificate to the Sheriff
After completing your training, you'll receive a certificate of completion. Submit this to the San Diego Sheriff's Department to finalize your permit application.
Receive Your CCW Permit
The Sheriff's Department will process your completed application and issue your California CCW permit. Processing times vary — the Sheriff's office can provide current estimates.
